Frederick won the coveted scholarship in Engraving to the British School at Rome in 1927, some five years after his brother had achieved the same distinction. Attempting to through off the burden of working in his brothers shadow he insisted on being called Austin Frederick, (Mr Frederick).
In an undated appreciation for an exhibition of Frederick's work at Leceister City Art Gallery Walter Lee described the on show as the last word in sincerety, and, as such, has 'a particular strength....In the same downright mood he has etched two delightful small landscapes of hayricks in the Roman Camapgna, both particularly happy in design.
