Monnington was significantly the first President of the Royal Academy to paint abstracts, and unlike his predecessors, he was prepared to throw open to debate questions about contemporary art. The Tate purchased Monnington’s Square Design in 1967. This collection, sourced directly from the Artist’s family, includes many of the original designs for his seminal Bristol ceiling (1953), similar examples of which are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, The British Museum and The Science Museum.
