Meredith and Kitty Monnnington, Evelyn Monningtons brother and sister in law, had a cottage in Suffolk, where Tom and Evelyn frequently went to stay. John Monnington recalls : I don't think it was very big and I recollect that whenever Tom and Evelyn went to stay their visit was usually cut short with a disagreeable row with Kitty, who, I imagine, resented any disturbance to her routine. She was unbelievably lazy and always used to preface any utterance with a long sigh! My reason for telling you this is that I expect Evelyn went upstairs to the visitors bedroom and did this little painting which looked along the corridor at the head of the stairs, so that she could escape from Kitty's sighs. This drawing is likely to date from Evelyn's time at the Royal College of Art where she trained in the 1930's. After this she worked for Heals and other designers. During the War she worked with the camouflage department (where she first met Tom Monnington, who she married in 1948) and later as a Canal Boatwoman. Her war dairies from 1943 have been serialized in Canals Rivers & Boats Magazine.
