Dearden is known to have painted various scenes of industrial activity, especially around his home town of Swindon, (whose motto is Salubritas et Industria). The background, real or imaginary, suggests one of the industrial towns of the Midlands.  The workmen are shown pouring hot pitch which suggests this is a bridge or viaduct.  The American influenced large chequered shirts suggest that this is a post Second World War drawing.
